Golden Eagles Get Seven Runs In Seventh To Beat Warriors

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got its offense going just in time Sunday for a California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal State Stanislaus.

The Golden Eagles scored seven times in the seventh inning and rallied past the Warriors, 10-4, Sunday at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (5-5, 3-1 CCAA) took three of the four games in the series from Cal State Stanislaus (4-7, 1-3 CCAA).

Cal State L.A. trailed, 4-0, entering the bottom of the fifth and was still behind, 4-3, before bunching together five hits and five walks to score seven times in the seventh inning.

Cliff Quick (1-1) blanked the Warriors on just two hits over the final four innings to pick up the win. He didn't walk a batter and struck out three. He also collected a pair of hits and drove in two runs at the plate. Mario Ramirez, Sam Wiley and Chris Matzner also had two hits each for the Golden Eagles.

Eric Cendejas (1-2) held the Golden Eagles without a hit for the first four innings and still had a 4-3 lead into the seventh before tiring. He left after giving up a go-ahead, one-out run-scoring single to Ramirez. Cal State Stanislaus used five pitchers before getting out of the inning.

Kory Vitato and Joey Blakely had two hits each for the Warriors.

#J.R. Bromberg# got the start for Cal State L.A. and worked five innings. He gave up only one earned run, while walking three and striking out three. The Golden Eagles committed three errors in the game, leading to three unearned runs.

Both starting pitchers sailed through the first three innings without allowing a hit, but the Warriors broke through first in the fourth. Vince Hungerford was hit by a pitch to start the inning and he took second on a wild pickoff attempt by Bromberg. He eventually scored on a single by Andrew Graves, who advanced to second on a wild throw in from left field. Graves later scored when Filkins singled to deep right.

The Warriors made it 4-0 with two runs in the fifth. Vitato doubled with one out and scored when Corey Conflenti reached on an error. Conflenti later scored on a run-scoring single by Joey Blakely.

The Golden Eagles got one run back in the bottom of the fifth. Quick singled to right for Cal State L.A.'s first hit of the game with one out to start the rally. After the Golden Eagles loaded the bases with two out, Quick scored when Joe Park's grounder to short was booted for an error.

Cal State L.A. pulled to within 4-3 in the sixth. Ramirez and Wiley singled and Quick doubled both of them in.

The Golden Eagles then put together their big rally in the seventh. Brendan McQuaid walked to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Park. After Matt Miraldi was intentionally walked, Jesus Campos singled to right to score McQuaid and tie the game. The runners advanced on a wild pitch and Ramirez singled in Miraldi to give the Golden Eagles the lead. That ended the day for Cendejas, but the Golden Eagles continued their rally against four relievers. Wiley had a two-run single to make it 7-4, Matzner and McQuaid had run-scoring singles to make it 9-4 and Miraldi drew a bases-loaded walk to finish the scoring. The Warriors' fourth reliever, Phillip Quade, finally got the final out of the inning.

Quick, who began pitching in the sixth inning, gave up a leadoff double in the eighth and a two-out single in the ninth, but that was it.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Thursday with the start of a four-game series at Cal State San Bernardino.
