LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team got its California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule off to a good start.
The Golden Eagles got a strong starting pitching outing from
Wally Goodline and backed him with an 11-hit attack and beat Cal State Stanislaus, 8-4, Friday at Reeder Field. Cal State L.A. (3-4, 1-0 CCAA) snapped a three-game losing streak.
Goodline worked eight solid innings and allowed only six hits and three runs. Cal State L.A. got four runs in the fifth inning, aided by a big throwing error by Cal State Stanislaus, to break open what was a 3-2 game at the time.
Cal State Stanislaus (3-5, 0-1) slugged three home runs, solo shots by Douglas Porras, David Contreras and Kory Vitato.
The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run single by McQuaid that drove in Matzner and Wiley. The Warriors tied it in the third inning when Vitato belted a solo home run to left and Casey Filkins delivered a two-out run-scoring single.
Cal State L.A. took the lead for good with a single run in the third. Ramirez doubled with two outs and scored on a double by Wiley.
The Golden Eagles then scored four unearned runs in the fifth.
Joe Park and Miraldi singled to lead off the inning and
Jesus Campos dropped down a sacrifice bunt. Relief pitcher Phillip Quade threw wildly to first, allowing Campos to reach and Park and Miraldi to both score. Campos wound up on third and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Wiley. Matzner had a two-out single to account for the final run of the inning and make it 7-2.
Cal State L.A. made it 8-2 with a run in the sixth when Ramirez doubled to drive in Miraldi.
The Warriors got solo home runs from Contreras in the seventh and Porras in the ninth to round out the scoring.
Matt Clark finished up for the Golden Eagles in the ninth.
The two teams will continue a four-game CCAA series with a doubleheader that has been pushed back to a noon start from 11 a.m.
