POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s baseball team made sure its long day at the ballpark was only half bad Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles dropped the opener of a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader, 6-2, before rebounding to win the nightcap, 11-2. Cal State L.A. (30-15, 21-11 CCAA remains in third place in the conference, one game behind second-place Sonoma State and three games behind conference-leading UC San Diego.
Cal State L.A. is also 1 1/2 games ahead of fourth-place Cal State Dominguez Hills and 3 1/2 games ahead of fifth-place Chico State. The top four teams in the conference will advance to the CCAA Championship Tournament.
Cal State L.A. left 12 runners on base while dropping the opener, but the Golden Eagles got another outstanding start from Yuichiro Fujiwara. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after two innings and Fujiwara limited Cal Poly Pomona (25-20, 15-17 CCAA) to just three hits and one run over five innings. John Dunn came on to get the Golden Eagles out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth inning and gave up only one hit in a scoreless seventh inning to end it.
Chris Lloyd had four hits, including three doubles, in the nightcap and scored two times. Chris Matzner had three hits, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs, Travis Tartamella drove in a pair of runs and Max Moya and Mario Ramirez scored a pair of runs each.
Cal State L.A. had 24 hits in the doubleheader, 12 in each game. Tartamella slugged his eighth home run of the season in the opener.
The Golden Eagles held a 2-1 lead in the opener until a five-run Cal Poly Pomona rally in the fifth inning put the Broncos ahead for good. Tartamella hit a solo home run leading off the second inning to put the Golden Eagles ahead and Moya had a run-scoring single in the third to put Cal State L.A. ahead, 2-1. Casey Yokubaitis (3-2) scattered 10 hits over seven innings to thwart the Golden Eagles, while Brad Wilson blanked Cal State L.A. over the final two innings.
Cal Poly Pomona bunched together five hits and two hit batters in the fifth inning off Cal State L.A. starter John Mitchell.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick 3-0 in the first inning of the nightcap. Tartamella singled in two runs and Matzner singled in the other. Cal State L.A. added a run in the second when Lloyd doubled and scored when Moya reached on an error.
After the Broncos got on the board in the third, Cal State L.A. added three runs in the fourth to break it open. Matzner singled in one run and Jesus Campos singled in two, all with two outs. The Golden Eagles added another run in the fifth when Lloyd doubled, stole third and came home on a throwing error. Cal State L.A. added two more runs in the sixth to make it 10-1 when Brendan McQuaid and Ramirez drew bases-loaded walks.
Lloyd added a run-scoring single for the Golden Eagles in the seventh.
Cal State L.A. will play its final home game of the season on Wednesday against Vanguard at 6 p.m. The Golden Eagles will then travel to Rohnert Park for a four-game series at Sonoma State.
