LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team suffered through a painful day in more ways than one Thursday at the CSULA Tennis Complex.
The Golden Eagles were blanked by recent NCAA Division II playoff nemesis Hawaii-Hilo, 9-0, and also lost senior
Princess Manasseh to a shoulder injury early in her match at No. 4 singles. Cal State L.A. (1-3) lost its third straight match. Hawaii-Hilo (4-4) is ranked fourth in the West Region and 24th in the country.
Hawaii-Hilo has beaten the Golden Eagles in the NCAA playoffs the past two seasons in Hawaii. The Vulcans picked up all three doubles points and two of them came in dramatic fashion. Cal State L.A.'s Manasseh and
Adriana Espinosa fell at No. 2 doubles to Hawaii-Hilo's Nicole Campbell and Justine Abella, 9-8 and
Marine Prevost and
Joyce Librando lost a close 8-6 decision at No. 3 doubles.
Cal State L.A.'s
Bojana Ducanovic jumped out to an early lead in the No. 1 singles match against nationally-ranked Eve Castaing of Hawaii-Hilo, but Castaing rallied for a 6-4, 6-2 win. Manasseh was injured on the second point of her match against Abella at No. 4 singles.
Prevost was locked in a close match at No. 5 singles for Cal State L.A. before falling to Akimi Kifune, 6-3, 7-5.
Cal State L.A. will return to California Collegiate Athletic Association action on Saturday with a home match against Sonoma State beginning at noon.
