LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team had to wait a couple extra days because of rain to get a chance to put a lopsided opening-day loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills behind it.
It was worth the wait.
The Golden Eagles got outstanding starting pitching performances from veterans
Isaac Morales and
John Mitchell, near-flawless appearances from their relievers and swept past Cal State San Bernardino, 9-3, 5-2, in non-conference baseball action Sunday at Reeder Field.
Cal State L.A. and Cal State San Bernardino, who will meet four times later this season in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, had singles games rained out on Friday and Saturday. The two teams weathered some persistent rain early in the opener on Sunday before partly cloudy skies and chilly temperatures were on tap for the rest of the day.
Cal State L.A. (2-1) was playing in its first game since a 15-2 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Monday.
Morales allowed just four hits and two runs in five innings of the opener to record his first win of the year and the 20
th of his Cal State L.A. career.
Camron Collard tossed two innings of scoreless relief,
Devon Ramirez pitched a scoreless eighth inning and
Wally Goodline allowed a run in the ninth to close things out.
In the nightcap,
Mario Ramirez drilled a three-run home run to erase a 2-1 Cal State San Bernardino lead and make a winner of Mitchell, who allowed six hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings of work.
Brian Dearth retired the only batter he faced to close out the sixth inning and
John Dunn worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning to record his first save.
Ramirez had a big day at the plate for the Golden Eagles. He hit a home run and drove in a pair of runs in the opener and his three-run homer to center in the nightcap enabled Cal State L.A. to sweep. He was 3-of-7 with three runs scored and five RBI in the doubleheader.
Matt Miraldi had a home run in the opener and reached base all four times he was at bat in the nightcap.
Darren Dworak hit a solo home run in the ninth inning of the opener for Cal State San Bernardino (2-4).
Morales (1-1) walked three and struck out six in five innings on Sunday. He blanked the Coyotes on two hits for four innings before giving up two runs on a pair of hits in the fifth.
The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 first-inning lead on a two-run double by
Toby Davis and made it 4-0 in the fourth inning when
Chris Lloyd singled up the middle with two outs and scored on a two-run home run by Miraldi.
After the Coyotes got a run-scoring single from Cody Madison and a run-scoring groundout by Omar Manzanares in the fifth inning, the Golden Eagles broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning.
Chris Matzner and Lloyd both reached base on bunt singles to start the rally and a sacrifice bunt by
Jesus Campos scored Matzner to make it 5-2. Ramirez followed with a two-run home run to make it 7-2 and when reliever Jorge Dryjanski hit Davis in the backside with the next pitch, he was promptly ejected.
Travis Tartamella greeted Chad Borowski with a double to score Davis and
Max Moya followed with a double to score Tartamella and make it 9-2.
Lloyd had three hits and scored a pair of runs in the game.
In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a triple by Tartamella and a two-out single by Matzner.
The Coyotes grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third inning. Madison reached on a two-out single that took a wicked bounce and struck Davis in the head at his second-base position. After Brent Planck drew a walk, Johnnie Haas singled to right to score Madison to tie the game and Jesus Beltran followed with a run-scoring single to give the Coyotes the lead.
Cal State L.A. struck back in the bottom of the inning. Miraldi was hit by a pitch to start the rally and Campos drew a walk. Ramirez followed with a towering home run to center to give the Golden Eagles a 4-2 lead.
The Golden Eagles added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Miraldi singled in Lloyd, who was hit by a pitch and then stole second.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Tuesday with a home non-conference game against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 2 p.m.
