Game 1 Box

Game 2 Box

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team was staring at the undesirable prospect of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series sweep at the hands of UC San Diego.

The Golden Eagles, though, quickly put those fears to rest by scoring 14 runs in the first two innings of a 16-6 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader Saturday at Reeder Field. UC San Diego had won the opener, 10-5, after posting lopsided victories in single games Thursday and Friday.

Cal State L.A. (12-7, 5-3 CCAA) pounded out 29 hits in the doubleheader, while UC San Diego collected 23 hits. The loss in the nightcap was the first for UC San Diego (10-4, 7-1 CCAA) in conference play, while the loss in the opener was the first for Cal State L.A. at home this season. The Golden Eagles are now 10-1 at Reeder Field.

Cal State L.A. had 18 hits in the nightcap, including 14 in the first two innings. Brendan McQuaid, Toby Davis and Travis Tartamella hit home runs in the game to lead the attack. McQuaid went 3-for-3 and scored four times, Davis was 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI, Max Moya was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Matt Miraldi and Jesus Campos both went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.

The Golden Eagles pounced quickly in the nightcap, scoring six times in the first on six hits and eight times in the second on eight hits. Travis Tartamella hit a two-run homer in the first inning, while Ramirez had a run-scoring single, Davis hit a sacrifice fly, Campos had a run-scoring single and Chris Lloyd had a run-scoring double.

Davis hit a two-run home run to start the eight-run second inning. Travis McBride doubled in a run, Matt Miraldi singled in two runs, Ramirez doubled in a run and Davis singled in a run to give him three RBI in the inning.

UC San Diego got three runs back in the third inning off Cal State L.A. starter Yuichiro Fujiwarar. Nick Burke doubled in a run, Vance Albitz followed with a RBI double and Evan Kehoe drove in a run with a groundout.

Cal State L.A. completed its scoring with a solo home run by McQuaid in the fourth and a run-scoring double by Campos in the sixth. Camron Collard pitched two innings of effective relief to pick up the win.

In the opener, Cal State L.A. erased an early 4-1 deficit and took a 5-4 lead after three innings. UC San Diego, though, got six innings of shutout pitching from Sean Greer to take control of the game. Greer improved to 3-0 with the win.

Cal State L.A. also got excellent relief from Nathan Pickett, who allowed only two hits and one unearned run in five innings of work.

All 15 runs in the game were scored in the first six innings. After Cal State L.A. took a 5-4 lead in the third inning on a three-run home run by Max Moya, UC San Diego regained the lead on a pair of home runs in the fourth. After Josh Tanner singled, Garrett Imeson hit a two-run home run to give the Tritons a 6-5 lead and Kehoe followed with a solo shot to make it 7-5. Greer's shutout pitching the rest of the way made those runs stand up.

Imeson and Kehoe had three hits each and scored three times for the Tritons. Imeson, Kehoe, Tom Mort and Robert Sedin each drove in two runs.

Ramirez was 3-for-3 for the Golden Eagles, while Tartamella had two hits.

Cal State L.A. will play an exhibition game against Keio University of Japan on Monday before resuming CCAA play with a four-game series at Chico State beginning on Friday.
