RIVERSIDE – Cal State L.A.'s baseball team couldn't muster much of anything against five California Baptist pitchers Tuesday.
The Golden Eagles were limited to just four hits and one run and fell to California Baptist, 7-1, Tuesday at James W. Tottman Stadium. Cal State L.A. (6-4) lost its third straight game, while California Baptist improved to 10-2.
The only run for the Golden Eagles came in the sixth inning when
Mario Ramirez hit his team-leading third home run of the season. That brought Cal State L.A. back to within 4-1, but California Baptist tacked on three more runs in the eighth inning to put the contest away.
Cal State L.A.'s only other hits were a first-inning single by
Toby Davis, a seventh-inning single by
Chris Matzner and ninth-inning double by
Brendan McQuaid. The Golden Eagles did draw six walks and had a batter hit, but they left eight runners on base.
Wally Goodline started for the Golden Eagles and gave up three earned runs in four innings of work. He gave up seven hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out three.
Devon Ramirez followed with two scoreless innings,
Danny DeSantiago pitched a scoreless inning and
Camron Collard was touched for three runs in the eighth inning.
California Baptist picked up 11 hits and had three batters hit by pitches. The Lancers stranded seven runners on base.
The Golden Eagles threatened in the first with a one-out walk to
Eric Quintero and a two-out single by Davis, but could not score. The Lancers struck quickly when Matt Johnson was hit by a pitch to lead off the first, took second on a single by Cole Bullard and scored on a single by Zach Hedges. Goodline did a good job of getting out of further damage by getting Eddie Quevedo to pop into a double play and striking out Jake Johnson.
California Baptist starter Bobby Kelley sailed through the next three innings without allowing a hit while the Lancers struck for an unearned run in the third and a run in the fourth on a run-scoring infield single by Brett McIntosh.
Hedges and Johnson collected doubles to produce a run in the fifth and, after Ramirez got the Golden Eagles on the board, a two-out solo home run by Levi Garrett sparked a three-run California Baptist uprising in the eighth inning.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener against San Francisco State.
