POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team got some late heroics Sunday to record another California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.
The Golden Eagles got a goal from
Jason Swope with less than 12 minutes remaining to post a 2-1 win over Cal Poly Pomona Sunday at Kellogg Field. Cal State L.A. (11-0-1, 9-0-1 CCAA) won its ninth straight match and increased its CCAA South Division lead in the process. The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 2 in the nation, have a conference-best 28 points and lead Cal State Dominguez Hills by 12 points in the CCAA South.
Swope scored his fifth goal of the season in the 79th minute with an assist from
Federico Cino to break a 1-1 tie. Cino had scored the Golden Eagles' first goal in the fifth minute on a free kick.
Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 17-9 advantage in shots, including a big 11-5 advantage in the second half.
Tobias Hummel made four saves for the Golden Eagles, while Thomas Ryan and Brad Jones combined for six saves in goal for Cal Poly Pomona (5-6, 3-5 CCAA).
The Golden Eagles had an 8-1 edge in corner kicks, including a 5-0 margin in the second half.
Cal State L.A. opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Cino drilled in a free kick for his team-best seventh goal of the season.
The Broncos evened things at 1-1 in the 33rd minute when Tyler Reinhart, who had scored four goals in his team's 4-2 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, got his fifth goal of the week. Sean Gurley had the assist.
That's how the score remained until the 79th minute when the Golden Eagles broke through for the game-winner. Cino took a shot and Swope was the first to the ball in front of the goal and he knocked it past Jones to give the Golden Eagles the lead.
The Golden Eagles' defense took it from there and Hummel made two saves down the stretch to preserve the victory. The last save came on a shot with a little more than one minute left.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a match at Humboldt State.
