HAYWARD -- Cal State LA's baseball team got the bats going in a big way Thursday in a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series opener at Cal State East Bay.
The Golden Eagles hit five home runs, including two grand slams, on their way to a 15-5 victory over the Pioneers at Pioneer Field. Cal State LA (19-15, 9-8 CCAA) won its third straight game to remain right in the thick of things in a tight CCAA race.
Omar Gonzalez, the CCAA leader in home runs, hit a pair on Thursday and now has 13 on the season. He slugged a two-run home run in the seventh inning and belted a grand slam in the eighth inning to complete the Golden Eagles' scoring.
The Golden Eagles, who trailed 3-1 after five innings, scored six runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and six in the eighth to earn the win.
Adam Axtell remained hot at the plate and hit a grand slam home run in the sixth inning to give the Golden Eagles their first lead of the game at 5-3.
Ben Lee hit a solo home run for Cal State LA's first run and
Steven Mara hit a two-run home run to give the Golden Eagles an 11-3 advantage in the eighth.
Isaac Quintero, making his second start of the season, had a strong outing to pick up his first win. He went 5 2/3 effective innings and allowed seven hits and only two earned runs. He walked three and struck out one.
Jake Spence came on and tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings with no hits allowed, one walk and two strikeouts and
Jacob Gudino closed things out by pitching the final two innings.
Omar Gonzalez was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and six runs batted in, while Lee was 3-for-5 with four runs scored. Mara was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI and
Kadyn Victorian was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Lee accounted for Cal State LA's first run of the game with a solo home run in the fourth to pull the Golden Eagles to within 2-1. After the Pioneers scored a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-1, the Golden Eagles struck for six runs in the sixth inning to turn the game around. Axtell hit a grand slam to put the Golden Eagles ahead, 5-3, and Victorian added a two-run single to make it 7-3.
Gonzalez hit a two-run home run in the seventh to make it 9-3 and Mara's two-run home run in the eighth made it 11-3. The grand slam by Gonzalez later in the inning made it 15-3.
Cal State LA will return to action with a doubleheader at Cal State East Bay on Friday beginning at noon.
