LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team went extra innings to pick up a non-conference win over Westcliff University on Saturday.
The Golden Eagles got some late-game heroics - twice - from
Carson Panarisi to overcome the Warriors, 8-7, at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (10-7) won both games of a brief two-game series with Westcliff (9-11).
Panarisi hit a game-tying two-run home run in the seventh inning to tie it and then reached on an infield single in the 10th to drive in
Kadyn Victorian with the winning run. Panarisi went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five runs batted in.
Jonathan Manuel also had a big day, both at the plate and on the mound. He went 3-for-4 with three RBI and also tossed three scoreless innings.
Ismael Quintero went four innings to get the win for the Golden Eagles. After allowing three runs in the seventh, he pitched three scoreless innings to give the Golden Eagles the opportunity to win the game.
Nick Malvini went 3-for-4 with four RBI for Westcliff, while Patrick Morgan went 4-for-5 with three runs scored.
Morgan hit a solo home run and Malvini doubled in two more to stake the Warriors to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning. Manuel hit a 2-run home run for the Golden Eagles in the second inning to make it 3-2, but Malvini's two-run single in the third made it 4-2.
Panarisi delivered a two-run single and Manuel had a run-scoring single in the fifth to give the Golden Eagles a 5-4 lead, but the Warriors got a two-run double from Jack Varney and a run-scoring single by Malvini to take a 7-5 lead in the top of the seventh.
The lead didn't last long because Panarisi hit a two-run home run to tie it in the bottom of the inning.
Victorian drew a leadoff walk and stole second to start the 10th for the Golden Eagles and a fly out by
Cesar Chavez moved Victorian to third. After
Alberto Prado was intentionally walked,
Omar Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Panarisi then reached on a single to win it in the next at bat.
Cal State LA will host Waseda University in an exhibition game on Monday before opening California Collegiate Athletic Association action at Cal State Monterey Bay beginning next Friday.
