Golden Eagles Check In At No. 5 In National Rankings

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team remains in the top-five in the United Soccer Coaches national rankings released on Tuesday.

The Golden Eagles went from No. 2 to No. 5 after two more shutouts last week that resulted in a win and a tie against Great Northwest Athletic Conference competition. The Golden Eagles battled to a 0-0 tie with Seattle Pacific on Thursday before edging Western Washington, 1-0, on Saturday. A goal in the 62nd minute from freshman Jeancarlo Alvarez was the only score of the week in the two games at University Stadium. Goalkeeper Brayden McClelland made seven saves in the two shutouts, two in the match against Seattle Pacific and a season-high five in the win over Western Washington.

Cal State LA has continued an impressive streak of appearances in the national rankings by appearing in the top-five in both regular-season polls this season. Cal State LA was ranked 11th in the nation in the preseason poll.

Cal State LA spent several weeks ranked as high as No. 2 last season and has now been ranked as high as first or second for six consecutive seasons. The Golden Eagles have reached the top-10 in seven straight seasons and 16 of the past 18 seasons. They have also made an appearance in a national poll in 20 straight seasons, a streak that started in 2005.

Defending national champion Lynn is No. 1 for the third straight poll, while Stanislaus State of the California Collegiate Athletic Association jumped from No. 14 to No. 2 after improving to 4-0 with wins last week over Simon Fraser and Saint Martin's of the GNAC. Cal State San Bernardino is ranked No. 11, giving the CCAA three teams in the top 11.

Cal State LA will head to Colorado this week for its first two road games of the season. The Golden Eagles will be at Colorado School of Mines on Friday and MSU Denver on Sunday.
