GOLDEN, COLORADO -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team allowed its first goals of the season, but the Golden Eagles were able to keep their season-opening unbeaten streak alive.
The No. 5 Golden Eagles surrendered their first goal of the season just 4:22 into Friday's match, but scored two goals in response before eventually settling for a 2-2 tie with Colorado School of Mines at Stermole Soccer Stadium. All four goals were scored in the first half of play.
Cal State LA (3-0-2) got goals from
Felix Alverdale and
Andreas Christou to take a 2-1 lead, but the Orediggers (1-1-2) got a goal in the 44th minute to tie it and neither team could score in the second half.
The Golden Eagles had a 14-7 edge in shots, including a 9-3 advantage in the first half. Cal State LA also had a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks with five of the six coming in the opening half.
Brayden McClelland made three saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Kiernan DiBella made four saves for Colorado School of Mines.
The Golden Eagles conceded an early goal off a corner kick as Charlie Newberry converted a header to the far post for his second goal of the season. Leonardo Santana had the assist.
Facing their first deficit of the season, the Golden Eagles responded quickly. Alverdale scored his first goal of the season with an assist from
Johnny Gonzalez in the ninth minute. Gonzalez sent a short cross to the center of the box that Alverdale fired inside the near post for the equalizer. It was Alverdale's second career goal, while Gonzalez picked up his second assist of the season.
Then, Christou scored his first goal for Cal State LA with a nice one-touch finish in the 23rd minute.
Alex Mendez and Alverdale had assists on the play.
The Golden Eagles, though, gave up the tying goal with just 1:07 remaining in the half. Lucas Taitt did the honors with an assist from Charlie Newberry.
Gonzalez had a team-high three shots for the Golden Eagles, while
Angel Sevillano, Alverdale and Mendez had two shots each.
Cal State LA will complete its Colorado trip with a game on Sunday against MSU Denver.
