Seven Golden Eagles Earn PacWest Academic Honors

NEWPORT BEACH -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team had a strong showing when the PacWest Conference announced its annual academic awards on Wednesday.

Seven members of Cal State LA's women's tennis team earned 2024-25 Academic All-PacWest Conference honors, continuing the program's outstanding academic showing.

Charlotte Downs, Courtlyn Lam, Sarah Olmos, Lea Rolland, Summer Roybal, Maldini Simic and Hideka Takamura were among a record 2,740 student-athletes honored by the conference. Student-athletes who achieved at least a 3.0 grade point average, completed two academic semesters at their institution and competed in a regular-season competition in a PacWest sponsored sport were eligible to receive the academic honor.

Cal State LA is an affiliate member of the PacWest Conference in women's tennis, joining fellow California Collegiate Athletic Association member Stanislaus State as part of the conference. The CCAA stopped sponsoring women's tennis following the 2010 season.

The 2025 season was Cal State LA's 10th competing as an affiliate member of the PacWest.

Listed below are the players with their majors:

Charlotte Downs, Fr., Kinesiology, 3.84
Courtlyn Lam, Sr., Business Administration, 3.66
Sarah Olmos, Jr., Biology, 3.73
Lea Rolland, Sr., Mechanical Engineering, 3.77
Summer Roybal, So., Kinesiology, 3.67
Maldini Simic, Jr., Political Science, 3.36
Hideka Takamura, Jr., Business Management, 3.93

Cal State LA has recorded six national top-25 finishes in the past 13 seasons and have three top-20 finishes during that span, including a national ranking of 15 in 2012, which was the best for the program since being No. 15 in 1995.

Cal State LA has a storied women's tennis program that has competed in the NCAA Championships nine times. Edna Olivarez won national titles in singles and doubles, with partner Jennifer Choi, in 1990. The program's most famous alum is legendary tennis pro and women's rights activist Billie Jean King, who played for Cal State LA from 1961-64. The athletics complex on campus is named in her honor.
