CLAREMONT -- Cal State LA's men's and women's track and field teams opened the 2025 outdoor season on Saturday at the Rossi Relays hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at Burns Stadium.
The Golden Eagles got individual victories from
Drew Hill and
Jonon Young to highlight the day. Hill won the men's 100 with a time of 10.47, while Young won the women's long jump with a mark of 19-0.
Matt Bender had an outstanding Cal State LA debut, placing second in the javelin with a mark of 194-9. That mark is better than the provisional qualifying standard.
Jahbari Fraser was third in the 100 with a mark of 10.74,
Gabriel Pearson was fourth in the 400 hurdles and eighth in the 110 high hurdles and the 4x400 relay team of
Drew Hill,
Jahbari Fraser,
Will Hall and
Taiten McKiver was fourth in 3:21.50.
Sinaiah Pointer was third in the women's shot put with a mark of 41-3.75, while
Vanessa Portillo was fifth in the hammer and seventh in the javelin.
"We are thrilled about our outdoor season launch. This marks the highest number of student-athletes from our team to appear on the first national list during my tenure at Cal State LA, Cal State LA head coach Tina Fernandez said. "It was remarkable to witness multiple personal bests achieved in every event. Notable performances included newcomer
Matthew Bender, who secured second place with a personal best of nearly 200 feet in his inaugural meet in the javelin, and
Vanessa Portillo, who improved her personal best marks."
"Additionally, our throwers demonstrated significant progress, with several earning spots on the national list. The hurdles group, having gained valuable experience last year, is eager to enhance their performances with the addition of new members. Our team comprises both young talent and experienced athletes. The distance group continues to show impressive advancements, while our women's sprint team is youthful and brimming with potential, complemented by a talented and seasoned men's sprint team. Five of our sprinters achieved personal bests, securing their places on the national outdoor list."
"The men's 4x100m relay commenced with an impressive performance; however, a bad handoff occurred in the second exchange zone between the second and third runners. Consequently, we will need to await the timing results to assess our standing. Both
Drew Hill (100m) and
Jonon Young (Long Jump) currently rank second on the national list. I take great pride in the accomplishments of all our athletes and coaches. I would also like to extend my gratitude to our parents, alumni, and friends for their unwavering support of the Golden Eagles.Â
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday at the RCC Invitational.
