Golden Eagles Bring The Offense In Evening Victory

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team had quite a night at the plate in a non-conference victory over La Sierra Saturday night at Reeder Field.

The Golden Eagles broke the game open early in the third and fourth innings and went on to a 25-2 win over La Sierra. Cal State LA (5-4) erased a 2-1 deficit with a seven-rally rally in the third inning and then really broke things open in an 11-inning fourth inning that put them ahead 19-2. The Golden Eagles, who have won three straight games since returning from Hawaii, added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and four more in the eighth.

Isaiah Marquez went 4-for-4 with four runs and six RBI for the Golden Eagles, including a three-run home run in the eighth inning. Matthew Piotrowski also went 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Kadyn Victorian went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Ethan Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Art Ruiz scored three runs and drove in two.

Anthony Lopez allowed only four hits and two runs in five innings to pick up the win. Brandon Gutierrez, Michael Gill, Troy Maki and Kai Penuelas followed with one scoreless inning each with Penuelas striking out the side in the ninth inning.

Cal State LA had a total of 24 hits and also received eight walks and seven hit batters.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a run-scoring double by Victorian, but La Sierra (2-3) got bases-loaded walks from Colin Mitchell and Gabriel Jones to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third.

Cal State LA responded with seven runs in the bottom of the third. Art Ruiz was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game and Marquez singled in the go-ahead run. Gonzalez made it 4-2 with a fielder's choice, Victorian walked with the bases loaded to force in a run, and Javy Espinoza singled in a pair of runs to make it 7-2. Piotrowski singled in the final run of the inning to make it 8-2.

The Golden Eagles then exploded for 11 runs in the fourth. Malik Clayton hit a three-run home run to start the onslaught and the Golden Eagles sent 17 batters to the plate before the inning finally ended.

Marquez added a three-run home run to highlight the four-run eighth inning.

Cal State LA will conclude the three-game series with La Sierra on Sunday at 1 p.m.
