LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team completed a series sweep on Sunday with a well-played 7-2 win over La Sierra at Reeder Field.
The Golden Eagles (6-4) won their fifth straight game with another impressive defensive showing. In fact, neither team committed an error as La Sierra (2-4) also played well defensively.
The Golden Eagles trailed 1-0 in the fourth inning before taking the lead for good with a five-run rally that was highlighted by a two-run home run by
Kai Penuelas.
Malik Clayton tied the game with a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring double by
Ethan Gonzalez gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Penuelas followed with a two-run home run and
Javy Espinoza doubled in Ethan Jackson for the final run of the inning.
Cal State LA didn't score again until adding two runs in the eighth. Gonzalez delivered a two-run single to give the Golden Eagles some breathing room.Â
Jorge Romero and
Joel Martinez were outstanding for the Golden Eagles on the mound. Romero improved to 2-0 after allowing two hits and two runs over six innings. He walked two and struck out four. Martinez picked up his first save with three shutout innings. He allowed only one hit and didn't walk a batter while striking out six.
Cal State LA outhit La Sierra, 8-3. Gonzalez and
Drew Emmons had two hits each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. game against Azusa Pacific, weather permitting.
