Golden Eagles Use Big Ninth Inning To Win Opener

POMONA -- Cal State LA's baseball team had a loud response after Cal Poly Pomona erased a two-run deficit with runs in the sixth and eighth innings.

The Golden Eagles erupted for nine runs in the top of the ninth innings to break a 6-6 tie and took the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series with the Broncos at Scolinos Field. Cal State LA (12-16, 7-12 CCAA) got a solid start from Owen Hunt and a 16-hit attack to upend Cal Poly Pomona (18-12, 10-10 CCAA).

The Golden Eagles had a pair of big innings, including a five-run rally in the fourth inning that gave them a 6-2 lead. That was surpassed by the nine-run ninth inning that included a pair of two-run triples and eight total hits. Anthony Angel Jr. led off the inning with a single and then delivered a two-run triple to give the Golden Eagles a 14-6 lead. Kadyn Victorian-Young had a two-run triple earlier in the inning that gave the Golden Eagles a 10-6 advantage.

Fabian Moran had four hits in the game, while Johnny Pacheco went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Six Golden Eagles - Pacheco, Angel, Michael Rosales, Moran, Nick Atkins and Victorian-Young - scored two runs. Matthew Piotrowski had a pair of hits and three RBI, while Pacheco, Angel and Victorian-Young drove in two runs each.

Hunt battled through seven innings of work, allowing 11 hits and five runs and striking out a career-high 11. Mikell Chavez allowed one run while pitching the eighth inning and Jacob Rangel pitched the ninth to complete the win.

Cal Poly Pomona had 15 hits, including three each from Johnny Pappas and Marco Malerba.

Cal State LA trailed 2-1 after three innings before taking the lead with its five-run fourth. Moran doubled in a run to tie it and Pacheco singled to give the Golden Eagles the lead. A bases-loaded walk by Art Ruiz made it 4-2 and Piotrowski contributed a two-run single to make it 6-2.

The Golden Eagles didn't score over the next four innings and the Broncos came back to tie it before the game-deciding ninth inning. Angel pinch hit and started the rally with a single. Moran picked up an infield single and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Ethan Gonzalez drove in the go-ahead run with a fielder's choice and Atkins followed with a single to make it 8-6. Victorian-Young tripled to right-center to make it 10-6 and he scored on a single up the middle by Pacheco. Piotrowski singled in another run to make it 12-6, Angel tripled in two more runs and scored on a groundout by Rosales to complete the scoring. Cal State LA had eight hits in the inning, including six in a row.

The series will continue on Friday with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
