POMONA -- Cal State LA's baseball team was riding high after a thrilling ninth-inning victory on Thursday night, but the Golden Eagles were unable to duplicate that success on Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles erupted for nine runs in the ninth inning on Thursday, but managed only three runs over 16 innings on Friday while dropping both ends of the doubleheader, 8-2, and 4-1. Cal State LA (12-18, 7-14 CCAA) got a two-run home run from
Michael Rosales in the opener and a run-scoring single from
Ethan Gonzalez in the nightcap. Cal Poly Pomona (20-12, 12-10 CCAA) got a pair of outstanding starting pitching performances in the doubleheader with Rhys Stevens allowing only four hits and the two-run home run to Rosales in a six-inning stint in the opener and Caleb Reyes scattering eight hits and allowing one run over 6 2/3 innings in the nightcap.
Rosales hit a two-run home run in the sixth for the Golden Eagles' lone runs. Gonzalez had a pair of hits in three at bats and
Fabian Moran also had a hit.
Julian Tellez got the start for the Golden Eagles and battled his way into the eighth innings, allowing 13 hits and seven earned runs over 7 1/3 innings. He didn't walk a batter and struck out six.
Troy Maki gave up two hits and got the final two outs of the eighth inning for the Golden Eagles.
In the nightcap,
Anthony Diaz made his first start for the Golden Eagles and allowed only two earned runs over four innings.
Colby Davis gave up only one hit in two scoreless innings to finish up. Â
