POMONA -- Cal State LA's baseball team certainly gave itself a chance at earning a split in the finale of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles had a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, but the Broncos tied it with five runs in the sixth and won it with a run in the ninth of a 6-5 win at Scolinos Field. Cal State LA (12-19, 7-15 CCAA) scored twice in the fourth inning and three times in the sixth, but Cal Poly Pomona (21-12, 13-10 CCAA) didn't allow a run over the final three frames and bunched together three singles and an intentional walk in the ninth inning to grab the win.
Eric Navarrete got the start for the Golden Eagles and didn't allow a run over the first five innings. He left after Cal Poly Pomona had its first two batters reach base in the sixth.
Joel Martinez worked the rest of the sixth inning and
Trevor Baugh went the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing just the one run on four hits.
Cal Poly Pomona outhit the Golden Eagles, 14-8.
Michael Rosales,
Fabian Moran and
Anthony Angel, Jr. had two hits each for the Golden Eagles, while
Johnny Pacheco and
Ethan Gonzalez each picked up a hit.
Cal State LA opened the scoring with two runs in the fourth. Pacheco singled, took third on a single by Rosales and scored on a sacrifice fly by Moran. Rosales later scored on a double by Rosales.
The Golden Eagles stretched their lead to 5-0 with three runs - all coming after two were out - in the sixth. Rosales reached on an error and took second on a single by Moran. Angel followed with a single to drive in Rosales and Gonzales singled in Moran with Angel also scoring on the play after an error, making it 5-0.
The Broncos, though, tied it with five runs on five hits and an error in the bottom of the inning, setting the stage for their walkoff win in the ninth.
Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with the opener of a four-game series against Sonoma State at Reeder Field. Â
