LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team scored last in an eventful seventh inning and took the opener of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association opener against Sonoma State.
Just minutes after Sonoma State had taken a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh, the Golden Eagles countered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame and edged the Seawolves, 7-6, at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (13-19, 8-15 CCAA) tied the game on a wild pitch and then grabbed the lead on a base hit up the middle by
Fabian Moran.
Cal State LA led 5-0 after three innings, but Sonoma State (12-16, 6-14 CCAA) scored twice in the fourth and twice in the sixth and then took a short-lived lead on a two-run home run in the seventh by pinch hitter Chris Ortiz.
Matthew Piotrowski and
Andrew Tovar were both hit by pitches to open the bottom of the seventh inning for the Golden Eagles and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by
Michael Rosales. Piotrowski scored on a wild pitch to tie it as Tovar took third and Moran followed with a single up the middle to drive in Tovar with what proved to be the winning run.
Mikell Chavez picked up the win for the Golden Eagles after retiring all eight batters he faced in an outstanding 2 2/3 innings of relief. He improved to 3-1 on the season.
Owen Hunt started for the Golden Eagles and gave up 10 hits and six runs over 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out five while giving the Golden Eagles a solid start and a chance to win.
Caleb Davis tossed three scoreless innings of strong relief for the Seawolves until running into trouble in the seventh. Scotty Kato gave up one hit over the final 1 2/3 innings for Sonoma State. Nik Kamages got the start and gave up five hits and five runs over the first three innings.
Piotrowski got the Golden Eagles on the board with a solo home run - his team-leading seventh of the season - in the first inning and Cal State LA stretched the lead to 5-0 with four runs in the third.
Johnny Pacheco struck out, but reached first on a wild pitch,
Art Ruiz singled up the middle and Piotrowski loaded the bases with no one out.
Andrew Tovar drove in a run by reaching on a fielder's choice and Ruiz also scored on a throwing error on the play to make it 3-0. Moran doubled in a run to make it 4-0 and
Drew Emmons grounded out to drive in
Michael Rosales to make it 5-0.
Sonoma State got a two-out, two-run home run from Braeden Holliday to cut it to 5-2 in the fourth and a Holliday run-scoring groundout and a run-scoring single by Cooper Callison made it 5-4 in the sixth. That set the stage for the two-run at bats for each team in the seventh.
Cal State LA will resume the series with a doubleheader against Sonoma State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Moran was 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Golden Eagles, while Ruiz was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
