LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team had everything working in the first game of Saturday's California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader with Sonoma State, but the second game didn't go as well.
The Golden Eagles got a pair of home runs from Anthony Angel Jr. in a 13-2 win in the opener, but managed just two hits in the nightcap and fell 9-0 at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (14-20, 9-16 CCAA) had 12 hits in the opener, including a home run from
Michael Rosales. Sonoma State (13-17, 7-15 CCAA) got a complete-game two-hit shutout from Tanner Fonoti in the seven-inning nightcap.Â
Cal State LA's offensive outburst in the opener backed the strong pitching of
Julian Tellez and
Colby Davis, who scattered nine hits between them. Tellez allowed two runs on six hits over six innings to get the win, while Davis tossed three innings of shutout relief to pick up his first save of the season. Tellez improved to 4-2 with the victory.
Angel Jr. had a pair of home runs and drove in five in the opener, while Rosales was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI.
Johnny Pacheco was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
The Golden Eagles struck early and loaded the bases on a leadoff double by Pacheco, a hit batter by
Art Ruiz and a walk to
Matthew Piotrowski. Rosales drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly and Angel Jr. followed with a three-run home run to left that was initially ruled foul. After a meeting among the umpires, the call was reversed and the ball was ruled fair, giving the Golden Eagles a 4-0 ;ead/
After the Seawolves made it 4-1 in the second, Rosales homered to lead off the fourth to make it 5-1. Mark Hernandez homered in the top of the fifth to cut the margin to 5-2, but the Golden Eagles scored eight runs over the next four innings to put the game out of reach. Piotrowski drove in a run on a fielder's choice as part of a three-run rally in the fifth and Rosales delivered a two-oiut, two-run double to make it 8-2.
Pacheco singled in a pair of runs in the sixth to make it 10-2 and Angel Jr. smacked his second home run of the game - this one to right-center with Rosales on first - to stretch the lead to 12-2. Cal State LA added another run in the eighth when
Wilem Drozdowski walked and eventually came around to score on pinch-hit single by
Kai Penuelas.
The second game didn't go nearly as well for the Golden Eagles as they committed five errors and managed only two hits.
Anthony Diaz allowed only two earned runs over 4 2/3 innings and
Jacob Rangel didn't allow a run while allowing two hits over the final two innings.
Cal State LA and Sonoma State will conclude the series at Reeder Field on Sunday at 11 a.m. Â
