Golden Eagles Fall To Seawolves In Series Finale

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team came up short in its bid for a series win over Sonoma State on Sunday.

The Golden Eagles saw the game get away from them in the middle innings of an 11-6 loss to the Seawolves in the finale of a four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (14-21, 9-17 CCAA) won the first two games of the series, but had to settle for a split when Sonoma State (14-17, 8-15 CCAA) rebounded to win the last two.

Cal State LA got home runs from Michael Rosales and Andrew Tovar as part of an 11-hit attack, but Sonoma State scored runs in six straight innings to take command. Cal State LA attempted to rally with one run in the eighth and three more in the ninth before the Seawolves recorded the final out.

Johnny Pacheco, Matthew Piotrowski, Tovar and Ethan Gonzalez had two hits each, while Fabian Moran had a two-run pinch-hit single for the Golden Eagles.

Jared Esparza had three hits and scored three runs for the Seawolves and Braeden Holliday had three hits and drove in three. Cooper Callison also had three RBI for Sonoma State, which recorded 15 hits and took advantage of seven walks. All seven walks contributed to six runs in the sixth and seventh inning.

Blake Janowicz allowed five hits and two runs over five innings, while Chase Banks allowed only three hits and one run over the next three. Eric Navarrete got the start for the Golden Eagles and gave up 10 hits and three earned runs over 4 1/3 innings, although he wasn't helped much by a defense that didn't make many plays behind him. Joel Martinez, Trevor Baugh and Troy Maki completed the game on the mound for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a run-scoring single by Tovar, but Sonoma State tied it in the second, took a 2-1 lead in the third and a 4-1 advantage in the fourth. Cal State LA made it 4-2 in the fourth on a leadoff home run by Tovar, but the Seawolves countered with one run in the fifth and three each in the sixth and seventh innings to take an 11-2 lead. Cal State LA got one run in the eighth on a long home run from Rosales and got a run-scoring double from Piotrowski and a two-run single from Moran in the ninth.

Cal State LA will return to action on Tuesday at Reeder Field with a single game against Cal State San Bernardino at 3 p.m. in a makeup of a game originally rained out earlier in the season.
