LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team came up big Tuesday in the second of three makeup games with Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles quickly erased an early 5-0 deficit with five runs in the bottom of the second and took the lead for good with a three-run rally in the seventh inning of a 9-7 win over the Yotes at Reeder Field. Mathew Piotrowski and
Ethan Gonzalez each had three hits to lead a 13-hit attack that included a two-run home run by Anthony Angel Jr.Â
Christian Casados, Deandre Carter and
Mikell Chavez combined to limit the Yotes to just five hits and one earned run over the final 7 1/3 innings. Casados gave up only three hits and an unearned run over 3 1/'3 innings, Carter gave up three hits and one run over two innings to pick up the win and Chavez allowed only one hit and struck out four in two innings to earn his first save.
There were 10 runs scored in the second inning as each team scored five times. After the Yotes took the lead, Angel Jr. hit a two-run home run to start the Golden Eagles' comeback.
Kadyn Victorian-Young singled in a run to make it 5-3,
Drew Emmons singled in a run to make it 5-4 and
Michael Rosales reached on an error while Emmons scored to tie it.
Johnny Pacheco singled in a run in the third inning to give the Golden Eagles a 6-5 lead, but the Yotes tied it with an unearned run in the fifth. The Yotes then took a 7-6 lead in the sixth on fielder's choice RBI by Daryl Ruiz.Â
Cal State LA, though, pulled ahead with a three-run rally in the sixth. Piotrowski doubled in a run to tie it and the Golden Eagles took the lead on a groundout by Rosales.
Ethan Gonzalez singled in another run to make it 9-7.
Chavez worked around a leadoff double in the eighth inning by Riley Parker, getting a groundout and a pair of strikeouts to end the inning. He then induced what appeared to be a game-ending double play ball in the ninth inning, only to see the grounder misplayed. He was undeterred, though, and got the final two outs via a strikeout and a liner to third base that Piotrowski handled without incident to end it.
Cal State LA will return to action with a four-game series at Cal State East Bay beginning on Friday.
