LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team had a day with mixed results Saturday at Reeder Field.
The Golden Eagles won a well-played opener, 6-4, before falling in the nightcap, 14-3, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader against San Francisco State. Cal State LA (11-14, 6-10 CCAA) collected 12 hits while leading from start to finish in the opener, but managed only six hits in the nightcap, which got away from the Golden Eagles early in a disastrous 10-run first inning.
Andrew Tovar was the hitting star in the opener, going 3-for-4 with a home run and four runs batted in, while
Matthew Piotrowski went 3-for-5 and scored three times.
Johnny Pacheco had a pair of hits.
Julian Tellez carried a shutout into the sixth inning before allowing a two-run home run to San Francisco State's AJ Schrader.
Mikell Chavez got the final out of the sixth inning and held the Gators to just one run over the next two innings and
Anthony Diaz worked around a solo home run in the ninth to pick up his third save of the season. Tellez gave up just four hits and two runs over 5 2/3 innings to improve to 3-1.
Tovar got the Golden Eagles off to a quick start in the opening inning, blasting a two-run home run to right with Piotrowski aboard in the first inning. He added a two-run single in the fifth to increase the lead to 4-0.
San Francisco State (15-11, 8-10 CCAA) got a two-run home run from Schrader in the sixth to slice the lead in half and closed to within 4-3 after a run-scoring double by Kody Gardner in the top of the seventh.Â
Cal State LA, though, got single runs in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder's choice RBI from
Fabian Moran and in the eighth on a run-scoring single by Pacheco to stretch the lead to 6-3.
Diaz got the final three outs in the ninth to preserve the win.
The nightcap was a different story as San Francisco State took advantage of a couple big Cal State LA mistakes to bunch together six hits and 10 runs in the first inning. Gavin Haimovitz had a two-run double and a two-out flyball with the bases loaded was dropped for three runs and followed up by a two-run double by Michael Cunningham to reach 10.
That was plenty of support for Gary Grosjean, who allowed only four hits and two runs over 5 2/3 solid innings.Â
Jaycee Flores allowed only one unearned run over 4 1/3 innings of strong relief for the Golden Eagles.
The series will conclude on Sunday with a single game beginning at noon.
