Golden Eagles Drop Opener To San Francisco State

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team had a tough opening to its four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series against San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles managed only three hits against a trio of San Francisco State pitchers and fell to the Gators, 6-0, Friday at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (10-13, 5-9 CCAA) didn't threaten to score until the ninth inning and saw a last-gasp bid end with the bases loaded.

Owen Hunt got the start for the Golden Eagles and gave up nine hits and six runs while working in and out of trouble. He walked four and hit two batters, but stranded nine batters to keep the Golden Eagles in the game.

Colby Davis had a strong game and blanked the Gators over 3 1/3 innings. He gave up three hits and walked one while striking out two. Deandre Carter pitched a scoreless inning for the Golden Eagles in the ninth.

San Francisco State (14-10, 7-9 CCAA) countered with a combined shutout from three pitchers. Mickey Radanovich started and tossed two scoreless innings before turning things over to Nathan Shinn, who allowed only one hit and one walk over six outstanding innings to pick up his third win of the season. He struck out seven. Justice Naraghi worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the ninth to complete the shutout.

Michael Rosales had a pair of doubles for the Golden Eagles, who had three hits, all doubles, in the game. Matthew Piotrowski doubled off the right-centerfield wall in the ninth inning to move Johnny Gonzalez to third with one out and Rosales walked with two outs to load the bases, but Naraghi got the final out on a popup to end the game.

AJ Schrader hit a two-run home run for the Gators, who collected 12 hits in the game. Sammy Gonzales had a pair of hits and scored three times from the leadoff spot, while Nick Upstill had a pair of hits, including a two-run single  and Kody Gardner also had a pair of RBI.

The series will continue with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
