LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's track and field team got another winning performance from All-American
Leon Tafirenyika to highlight the day at the Occidental Distance Carnival and Spring Break Classic.
Tafirenyika won the 400 meters for the third time in three meets with a season's best 47.85 that ranks as the No. 1 time in the nation and is just above the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard of 47.83.
Tafireynika also ran the opening leg for the winning 4x400 relay team from Cal State LA that included
Shannon Turner,
Burrell Adams, and
Jesus Nichol II that posted a season's best time of 3:17.03. That was four seconds better than the relay's previous best time this season.
Shannon Turner was fourth in the 800 with a season's best time of 1:53.14, while Nichol II was 43rd in 2:01.32. Nichol II was also 15th in the 1,500 with a time of 4:01.67, while
David Bonds was 4:36.35.
Riyanna Jackson had the best performance for the women's track and field team after finishing fourth in the javelin with a mark of 100-3.
Paloma Sanchez competed in the 1,500 and recorded a time of 5:36.11 while finishing 73rd.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday, March 17, at the Redlands Invitational.Â
