Box Score LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA and Cal State San Bernardino almost got a baseball game completed on Thursday in advance of what is expected to be major rainfall.
The Golden Eagles and Coyotes made it into the top of the eighth inning before hail finally put an end to a long delay. The game was suspended with Cal State San Bernardino (9-1) holding a 16-5 lead over Cal State LA with two outs and no one on in the top of the eighth.
The game will be completed when the series resumes on Sunday, weather permitting.
Cal State LA got off to a strong start thanks to a two-run home run in the bottom of the first from
Art Ruiz, but the Coyotes responded with four runs in the top of the second and kept on going to their big lead. Cal State San Bernardino got home runs from DeShawn Johnson, Daryl Ruiz and Danny Garcia. The Coyotes had 18 hits against four Cal State LA pitchers when the game was halted. Garcia was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI.Â
The Golden Eagles managed six hits.
Kai Penuelas and
Wilem Drozdowski each had one run batted in each.
Benny Olguin stands to pick up the win for Cal State San Bernardino after allowing four hits and four runs over 5 2/3 innings.
Owen Hunt got the start for Cal State LA and allowed 10 hits and five earned runs over 3 2/3 innings on a day that definitely favored the hitters with the winds blowing out toward right field at a pretty healthy clip.
The series is scheduled to resume on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the completion of Thursday's game followed by a doubleheader.
