Golden Eagles Earn Three Titles At CCAA Meet

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's men's track and field team had an outstanding final day at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Track & Field Championships at San Francisco State's Cox Stadium.

The Golden Eagles earned three conference championships and finished fourth as a team on Saturday to conclude the three-day meet. Cal State LA's Leon Tafirenyika won the CCAA championship in the 400 meters, while the 4x100 relay team of Shingirai Hlanguyo, Darnelle Harris, Anthony Richardson and Tafirenyika and the 4x400 relay team of Clifton Johnson, Hlanguyo, Tafirenyika and Jesus Nichol II also won conference titles.

After the championships, Tafirenyika was named the conference's Newcomer of the Meet in voting by the conference coaches.

Hlanguyo also had a second-place finish in the 100 and a third-place finish in the 200 to run his career total of All-CCAA awards to nine with the four that he won on Saturday.

Myles Molette-Hughes earned All-CCAA honors with a third-place finish in the triple jump.

The top three finishers in each event earned All-CCAA recognition.

Cal State LA finished fourth as a team with 88 points.

Tafirenyika, who has a solid provisional qualifying mark in the 400, continued his season-long dominance in the 400 and recorded a winning time of 47.80. The two-time CCAA Track Athlete of the Week won three championships with the two relay races and the one individual event.

The 4x100 relay team had a winning time of 40.69, while the 4x400 relay team had a winning time of 3:11.08. Both are season's bests and both are provisional qualifying marks. The 4x100 relay team is No. 22 in the nation, while the 4x400 relay team is No. 9 in the nation as of early Saturday evening. Tafirenyika is No. 13 in the 400 meters.

Hlanguyo's second-place time in the 100 was a season's best of 10.53 and his time in the 200 was 21.65.

Darnelle Harris scored points in both sprints for the Golden Eagles, taking fourth in the 100 in 10.64 and placing fifth in the 200 in 21.98.

Molette-Hughes earned All-CCAA honors after his season's best mark of 46-0.75 earned him a third-place finish in the triple jump. Sean Atkins earned points for the Golden Eagles after finishing sixth with a mark of 44-5.50.

Xavier Williams earned points in a pair of events for the Golden Eagles on Saturday, taking fourth in the 110 high hurdles in 14.70 and fourth in the 400 hurdles with a mark of 55.22.

Cal State LA's track and field teams dedicated the conference championship meet to volunteer assistant coach Darrell Augusta and his family. Augusta passed away earlier this week.
