SURPRISE, ARIZ. -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team picked up a first-round win Wednesday at the PacWest Conference Championship Tournament.
The Golden Eagles won the doubles point and captured three singles contests to post a 4-2 win over Dominican at the Surprise Tennis Club. Cal State LA (7-8) was the No. 7 seed and toppled No. 10 seed Dominican (10-7). The Golden Eagles now advance to the quarterfinals where they will face No. 2 seed Azusa Pacific on Thursday at 1 p.m.
Chelsey Ruiz picked up the match-clinching point for the Golden Eagles with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Zoe Coggins at No. 5 singles. It was her fifth straight singles win.
The Golden Eagles clinched the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.
Berta Acero and
Sarah Olmos posted a 6-3 win over Gina Dudley and Audrey Rafols at No. 1 doubles and
Noa Davico and
Sakura Kurokawa beat Haley Garcia and Gigi Alajeely at No. 2 doubles, 6-1.
The match at No. 3 doubles between Cal State LA's
Savaughna Mayo and
Courtlyn Lam and Dominican's Zoe Coggins and Julia Rydel went unfinished once the doubles point was clinched.
Davico beat Garcia, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles, Acero beat Dudley at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0, for her 10th victory in a row and Ruiz finished the match with her win at No. 5 singles.
Kurokawa fell at No. 4 singles to Julia Rydel, 6-4, 6-4, while Olmos' match at No. 1 singles went unfinished after the match was decided.
Cal State LA will be meeting Azusa Pacific for the third time this season. The Cougars won the previous two meetings by 5-2 scores.Â
