SURPRISE, ARIZ. -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team came up short Thursday in a quarterfinal match of the PacWest Women's Tennis Championships against No. 18 Azusa Pacific.
The Golden Eagles dropped the doubles point and the first three singles matches to finish in a 4-0 loss to the Cougars at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club. Cal State LA (7-9) will now play in a consolation match on Friday at 1 p.m. against Biola and in a 1 p.m. match on Saturday for either fifth or seventh place.
Azusa Pacific (16-6) picked up its third win over the Golden Eagles this season. The two previous matches went to the Cougars by 5-2 scores.
Berta Acero and
Sarah Olmos fell at No. 1 doubles to Madison Kane and Nora Liga, 6-2 and
Courtlyn Lam and
Savaughna Mayo fell at No. 3 doubles to Carolyn Brooner and Katherine Nguyen, 6-1.
Sakura Kurokawa and
Noa Davico had a 5-4 lead at No. 2 doubles when the match was called.
Liga then beat Olmos, 6-1, ,6-3, at No. 1 singles, Kane beat Davico, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles and Nguyen beat Mayo, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 6 singles to secure the win for the Cougars.
Chelsey Ruiz had a 6-3, 1-4 lead at No. 5 singles for the Golden Eagles when the match was halted, while Acero and Kurokawa trailed in their matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
