Golden Eagles Drop Road Match At No. 14 Biola

LA MIRADA -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team was unable to slow down No. 14 Biola on Wednesday in a clash of PacWest Tournament qualifiers.

The Golden Eagles, who found out earlier in the week they had earned their way into the 12-team conference tournament championship, fell short to the Eagles, 5-2, at the Biola Tennis Center. Cal State LA (6-8) dropped the doubles point like it did on Monday in a 6-1 win at Concordia, but the Golden Eagles were unable to turn things around in singles. Biola (20-3) capped an undefeated home schedule by winning four of the six singles matches.

Cal State LA picked up a pair of victories in singles. Berta Acero won a third-set tiebreaker to outlast Alexandria Mann at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 and Chelsey Ruiz played well in a straight-sets win over Gaby Carvajal at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-3. Acero stretched her winning streak in singles to nine in a row, while Ruiz won her fourth straight.

The Golden Eagles fell short in a pair of hard-fought three-set contests. Noa Davico was edged at No. 2 singles by Mary Brascia, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 and Sakura Kurokawa was edged by Lilly McNeill at No. 4 singles, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Sarah Olmos fell to one of the nation's top players, Colbeyshae Emery, at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1 and Courtlyn Lam fell at No. 6 singles to Ines Diaz, 6-4, 6-2.

In doubles, Acero and Olmos fell at the No. 1 spot, 6-2, to Emery and Brascia and Lam and Savaughna Mayo fell to Diaz and Carvajal, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles. Davico and Kurakawa led 5-4, at No. 2 doubles when the match was clinched.

This ends Cal State LA's regular season. The Golden Eagles' match with Point Loma on Friday has been cancelled. The team still plans on a Senior Day celebration for seniors Berta Acero, Noa Davico and Chelsey Ruiz on Friday at 1:15 p.m.
