Golden Eagles Sweep Past Marymount University

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's tennis team, after a close call against UC Irvine on Saturday, came out on the winning side on Wednesday against Marymount University.

The Golden Eagles took the doubles point and then won all six singles contests in straight sets to beat the Mariners, 7-0, at the Cal State LA Tennis Complex. Cal State LA (2-5) snapped a five-match losing streak and earned head coach Richard Gallien the 400th women's tennis win of his illustrious coaching career.

Gallien had a 393-161 in 22 seasons at USC before joining Cal State LA. He led the team to five wins in 2020 before the season was halted and the Golden Eagles picked up their second win of the 2022 season on Wednesday.

The Golden Eagles showed some great promise on Saturday in their 4-3 loss to UC Irvine and they kept up the momentum on Wednesday, taking early control in the doubles. Berta Acero and Sarah Olmos won at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, over Madison Giese and Ysabelle Arumbula and Sakura Kurokawa and Noa Davico won at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, over Fiorella Dreux and Hannah White. Savaughna Mayo and Courtlyn Lam were leading in the No. 3 doubles match, 4-2, when the point was clinched.

Cal State LA then won all six singles matches in straight sets to complete the win.

Olmos beat White at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1, Kurokawa beat Giese, 6-0, ,6-1, at No. 2 singles, Davico beat Dreux, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles, Acero beat Shahrazad Barakat, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4 singles, Taylor Barnes won by injury retirement at No. 5 singles after building a 6-4, 2-1 lead and Mayo beat Sarah Webha, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 6 singles.

Cal State LA had its match next week against Concordia pushed back to March 26 so the Golden Eagles will now return to action with a home match against Middlebury on Sunday, March 20 at 11 a.m.
