SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team will be making its fifth straight appearance in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament championship match on Sunday, only this time with a twist.
Cal State LA faced Cal Poly Pomona in each of the previous four finales, but this time No. 1 seed and regular-season champion Cal State Dominguez Hills is the opponent on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Cal State San Bernardino's Premier Field. The No. 2 seed Golden Eagles (14-1-3) advanced to their fifth straight final with a 2-1 win over Sonoma State on Friday, while the Toros (14-0-5) earned their spot with a 2-0 win over Chico State.
The title game matchup has national and regional implications as well. Cal State LA, the two-time defending CCAA Tournament champions, is ranked No. 8 in the nation by the United Soccer Coaches and No. 2 in the Super Region 4 by the NCAA Men's Soccer Committee. Cal State Dominguez Hills is ranked No. 3 in the nation and No. 4 in the Super Region.
The two conference powerhouses lead in all-time tournament appearances and tournament titles. The Toros are making their conference-best 19th appearance, their 11th title game appearance and seeking a record eighth title. The Golden Eagles are making their 15th appearance, which is tied for second with Sonoma State overall, their eighth title game appearance and seeking their sixth title.
Cal State LA, the defending NCAA Division II champions, have won three of the past four CCAA Tournament titles and are making their 11th straight trip to the tournament.
While the Cal State LA men's team is making its eight appearance in a CCAA Tournament title game and the women's team is making its sixth Sunday against Sonoma State in Rohnert Park, this year marks the first time that both Cal State LA soccer programs will be in conference title games in the same season.
Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills will be meeting for the fourth time overall in CCAA Tournament history and for the second time in the final. The Toros took a 2-1 decision in the previous championship game meeting in 2006.
The two teams didn't meet again in the CCAA Tournament until 2017 when Cal State LA advanced to the title game after a 1-1 tie in the semifinals that was decided on penalty kicks. The Golden Eagles beat the Toros last season, 4-2, in a semifinal matchup.
The Toros handed the Golden Eagles their only loss this season in a 1-0 decision in Los Angeles on a second-half goal by Martin Velasquez. Cal State LA is 7-0-3 in 10 games since that meeting.
