LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team was unable to overcome a slow start Thursday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest against Cal State East Bay.
The Golden Eagles surrendered the first 11 points of the game and never could recover in a 105-80 loss to the Pioneers in University Gym. Cal State LA (2-5, 0-2 CCAA) was able to slice the deficit to three points, but Cal State East Bay (3-5, 1-1 CCAA) extended the lead to 19 points by halftime and kept the advantage the rest of the way.
Elisha Duplechan had a game-high 18 points to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures.
Adrease Jackson had 14 points, five rebounds and five assists and
Dominic Escobar had 13 points and six rebounds.Â
Zack Perlstein had 18 points to lead five Pioneers in double figures. Zafir Williams had 17 points and eight rebounds and Kaito Williams had 14 points.
Lyrik Shreiner and
Ben Uloko had nine points each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA shot 49.1 percent for the game (28-of-57) and was 7-of-17 from 3-point range. Cal State East Bay shot 50.7 percent (34-of-67) and knocked down 16 of 31 attempts from 3-point range for a sizzling 51.6 percent). Cal State LA was 17-of-23 from the free-throw line, while Cal State East Bay was 21-of-26. Cal State East Bay had a 36-28 rebounding edge.
The Golden Eagles allowed the first 11 points before
Trevor Thompson hit a 3-pointer to get the Golden Eagles on the board. Five quick points from
Alexander Sokol cut the margin to five points at 13-8 and a basket by Uloko kept it at 15-10. A layup by Shreiner made it 17-14 midway through the first half, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get. Another basket by Shreiner made it 27-24 with 5:52 remaining in the half, but the Pioneers went on a 26-10 run to take a 53-34 halftime lead.
Cal State LA was unable to get closer than 18 points the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 3 p.m.
