LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team battled back from a second-half deficit, only to see a late loose ball foul in the final seconds spoil the ending.
The Golden Eagles fought all the way back from a 10-point deficit in the final seven minutes to tie the game at 72-72 after a steal and layup by
Dominic Escobar with 14 seconds left. After the Golden Eagles played solid defense and forced a missed shot, they were whistled for a foul while players battled for the rebound with 1.3 seconds left, giving Chris Seeley the opportunity to hit the game-winning free throws in a 74-72 Toro victory.
Elisha Duplechan led the Golden Eagles (2-6, 0-3 CCAA) with 19 points and was the driving force in the late comeback.
Ben Uloko had a season-high 17 points and seven rebounds, while
Alexander Sokol had 15 points, including 12 on a nice 4-of-8 performance from 3-point range.
Seeley ended up with a game-high 20 points for the Toros (4-4, 2-1 CCAA), whh also got 10 points each from Hunter Seymour and Andre Bal.
Escobar had eight points and eight rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA was 25-of-57 for the game (43.9 percent) and hit 8-of-22 from 3-point range. Cal State Dominguez Hills was 29-of-64 for the game (45,.3 percent) and was just 3-of-20 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 14-of-21 from the free-throw line, while the Toros were 13-of-19. Cal State LA had a 38-32 rebounding edge, but committed 22 turnovers to 17 for the Toros.
The Golden Eagles got back-to-back 3-pointers from
Sean Estes to open up a 6-2 lead, but the Toros went on a 16-0 run to open up an 18-6 lead. A 3-pointer by Escobar halted the run and the Golden Eagles stayed within striking distance before entering the half down, 36-30.
Trailing by 10 points with seven minutes to go, the Golden Eagles got a 3-pointer by Sokol and back-to-back baskets by Duplechan to slice the deficit to three points, 64-61, with 5:38 to go. The Golden Eagles finally pulled into a tie after an offensive rebound basket by Sokol and Escobar's late layup.Â
Cal State LA will return to action next Thursday with a road game at San Francisco State.Â
