SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team endured its second straight heartbreaking last-second California Collegiate Athletic Association defeat.
Elisha Duplechan hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 79-79 with 10 seconds to go, but San Francisco State got a 3-pointer from Toby Okwuokei with 0.2 seconds left to lift the Gators to an 82-80 victory.
Alexander Sokol hit a free throw after San Francisco State received a technical foul after the basket to account for the final points, but the Golden Eagles didn't have enough time left to get a shot.
Thursday's tough defeat came on the heels of a two-point loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills last Saturday that came after a foul with 1.3 seconds left.
Sokol led four Golden Eagles (2-7, 0-4 CCAA) in double figures with 22 points, while Duplechan had 17 points.
Shane Bell had 13 points and six rebounds, while
Adrease Jackson had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Okwuokei had 18 points to lead four Gators (4-5, 2-1 CCAA) in double figures.Â
Cal State LA shot 44.3 percent overall (27-of-61) and hit 7-of-22 from 3-point range. San Francisco State shot 40.6 percent (28-of-69) and hit 11-of-28 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 19-of-22 from the free-throw line, while the Gators were 15-of-21. Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 43-35 and both teams committed 15 turnovers.
The Golden Eagles once again did an admirable job of battling back from a slow start. Cal State LA trailed 17-6 just five minutes into the game, but fought back to tie it at 34-34 after a basket by Jackson and then took a 41-36 lead after a 3-pointer by Sokol, a layup by
Lyrik Shreiner after a steal by Bell and a jumper by Duplechan. A 3-pointer by Sokol gave the Golden Eagles a 44-38 lead and they settled for a 44-41 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles fell behind, 56-51, before a basket by Bell and a 3-pointer by Sokol tied it at 56-56. San Francisco State responded by scoring the next nine points, but Cal State LA went on a 10-0 run to take a 66-65 lead. A Jackson free-throw, a 3-pointer by Sokol and baskets by Duplechan, Bell and Jackson put the Golden Eagles ahead, 66-65, with 6:10 to go.
Cal State LA took a 75-72 lead on a basket by Duplechan with three minutes to go, but the Gators went on a 7-1 run to take a 79-76 lead. Duplechan's 3-pointer tied it with 10 seconds left, but the Gators broke their hearts with an even later 3-pointer.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a conference game at Cal State Monterey Bay.
