Golden Eagles Unable To Hold Halftime Lead

SEASIDE -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team was in position to earn its first California Collegiate Athletic Association victory, but the Golden Eagles were unable to keep an eight-point halftime lead.

The Golden Eagles held a 44-36 halftime lead, but Cal State Monterey Bay outscored them, 47-29, over the final 20 minutes to post an 83-73 win in the Otter Sports Center. Cal State LA (2-8, 0-5 CCAA) dropped its sixth straight game, while Cal State Monterey Bay (4-3, 3-1 CCAA) won its third conference game in four tries.

Lyrik Shreiner led four Golden Eagles in double figures with 16 points, while Elisha Duplechan and Adrease Jackson had 14 points each.

Levi Frankland was the star of the game, pouring in a game-high 31 points to lead the Otters. Jordan Day had 14 points.

Alexander Sokol had 12 points for the Golden Eagles, while Dominic Escobar added eight points and Shane Bell had five points and four assists.

It was a tale of two halves for the Golden Eagles, who shot a sizzling 60.7 percent (17-of-28) in the first period, but only 23.3 percent (7-of-20) in the second half. The Otters, on the other hand, shot 34 percent in the first half and 51 percent in the second.

For the game, Cal State LA shot 41.4 percent (24-of-58) and made 9-of-21 from 3-point range. Cal State Monterey Bay shot 42.5 percent for the game (31-of-73) and was just 6-of-27 from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 16-of-24 from the free-throw line, while the Otters were 15-of-23. Cal State LA started well and scored the final four points of the first half on layups by Escobar and Bell to take a 44-36 halftime lead.

A layup by Escobar and a pair of free throws by Sokol gave the Golden Eagles a 48-39 lead with 19 minutes remaining and still led 57-53 after a basket by Duplechan and a free throw by Sokol with 12:30 to go. A three-point play by Duplechan gave the Golden Eagles a 64-59 lead with 9:47 to go, but the Otters went on a 13-1 run to take a 72-65 advantage.

Cal State LA was still within five points, 78-73, after a pair of free throws by Jackson, but the Otters scored the final five points of the game.

Cal State LA will return to action on Monday, Dec. 20, with a road game at Fresno Pacific.
