Golden Eagles Pick Up A Big Road Victory

FRESNO -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team turned in an excellent performance Monday and will head into the holidays with a big road victory.

Lyrik Shreiner had a season-high 28 points and seven rebounds and the Golden Eagles limited Fresno Pacific to just 35 percent shooting in an impressive 79-58 win at the Special Events Center. Cal State LA (3-8) snapped a six-game losing streak and handed Fresno Pacific (7-4) only its second home loss of the season.

Shreiner had a huge game to lead the way. He was 10-of-17 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range. He was also 6-of-7 from the free-throw line and had seven rebounds.

Alexander Sokol had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the short-handed Golden Eagles, who, due to injury and illness, had only eight players see playing time on Monday.

Jelani Watson-Gayle had 21 points to lead Fresno Pacific. All of his points came via a 7-of-14 performance from 3-point range.

Dominic Escobar had a strong game for the Golden Eagles, contributing 11 points, six rebounds and two assists. Ben Uloko had nine points and five rebounds.

Cal State LA shot 47.1 percent for the game (24-of-51) and made 7-of-18 from 3-point range. Fresno Pacific, meanwhile, shot 35.7 percent (20-of-56) and was 11-of-30 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 14-of-18 from the free-throw line, while Fresno Pacific was 7-of-11. Both teams grabbed 32 rebounds, while Cal State LA committed just eight turnovers to 12 for Fresno Pacific.

The Golden Eagles held just a four-point lead at 54-50, but a three-point play by Shreiner pushed the lead to 57-50 with 4:22 to go and Cal State LA maintained a safe advantage the rest of the way.

Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 2 against Cal State San Marcos at 3 p.m.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as five points in the first half, 20-15, but 3-pointers by Trevor Thompson and Shreiner erased that deficit. Fresno Pacific still led, 25-23, but the Golden Eagles closed the half with a 10-2 run and took a 33-27 halftime lead following a 3-pointer by Sokol.

A 3-pointer by Escobar opened the lead up to 36-27 and back-to-back baskets by Shreiner gave the Golden Eagles a 12-point lead at 40-28.

Fresno Pacific battled back to tie the game at 46-46, but a basket by Escobar and a 3-pointer by Sean Estes out the Golden Eagles ahead for good.
