LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team put on a quite a show Monday in the Golden Eagles' home opener in University Gym.
After struggling away from home in their first two games, the Golden Eagles came out firing on all cylinders on Monday, racing to a 49-25 halftime lead and beating Simon Fraser, 88-77. Six Cal State LA players scored in doubles figures, while Simon Fraser had three hit double digits in a fast-paced game between regional foes.Â
Elisha Duplechan led the way for Cal State LA (1-2) with 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, while
Trevor Thompson had 18 points, including a 4-of-7 performance from 3-point distance.
Julian Roche had 23 points and seven rebounds for Simon Fraser (1-2), while Josiah Mastandrea had 22 points.
Dominic Escobar had 12 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Golden Eagles, while
Alexander Sokol had 11 points and six rebounds.
Adrease Jackson and
Wesley Harris Jr. had 10 points each.
Cal State LA shot 52.5 percent for the game (32-of-61) and knocked down 10-of-23 attempts from 3-point range. Simon Fraser shot 35.6 percent (26-of-73) and made 10-of-38 behind the 3-point arc.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed a 47-31 rebounding edge, but committed 19 turnovers to just 10 for Simon Fraser.
Cal State LA came out aggressively and played with intensity throughout the contest. After racing to the 24-point halftime lead, the Golden Eagles built leads as large as 32 points in the second half before Simon Fraser made a spirited run late to bring the final margin down to 11 points.
The Golden Eagles scored the first nine points of the game and never trailed. Jackson scored the first basket of the game, Sokol added a 3-pointer and Escobar scored four straight points to get Cal State LA off to its quick lead.
Simon Fraser cut the margin to four points, 19-15, but a 3-pointer by Thompson and a jumper by Jackson built the lead back to 24-15.Â
A 3-pointer by Duplechan gave the Golden Eagles their first double-digit lead at 31-20 and the Golden Eagles closed the half on a 18-3 run to build the 49-25 advantage.
Cal State LA started the second half quickly as well and scored the first six points on a free throw by Jackson, a layup by Duplechan and a 3-pointer by Sokol to take a 30-point lead with 18 minutes to play. The Golden Eagles led by as many as 32 points twice and still led by 29 points, 72-43, after a basket by Thompson with eight minutes to go.
The Golden Eagles then surrendered a 13-0 run to make it 72-56 before a 3-pointer by Duplechan boosted the lead back to 19 points with 4:47 to go. A dunk by Harris gave the Golden Eagles an 82-62 lead with 1:30 to go.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a game against Bethesda at 4 p.m.
