No. 8 Golden Eagles Win Again On Senior Day

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team got to celebrate another California Collegiate Athletic Association victory after honoring its outstanding senior class on Sunday.

The No. 8 Golden Eagles scored twice in the first half and went on to a 3-0 victory over Humboldt State at University Stadium. Cal State LA (11-2-2, 9-0-1 CCAA, 28 points) stretched its conference unbeaten streak to 24 games dating back to 2018 and set the stage for a first-place showdown on Thursday. The Golden Eagles will enter Thursday's regular-season finale with Cal Poly Pomona (26 points) with a two-point lead over the Broncos. Both teams have already clinched first-round byes for the CCAA Tournament and the winner on Thursday will claim the conference's regular-season championship. Cal State LA is the defending CCAA regular-season champions.

The Golden Eagles notched their 10th shutout of the season with the win over Humboldt State (10-4-2, 4-4-2 CCAA), which is still battling for one of two spots left in the conference tournament. The 'Jacks are currently in fifth place with one game remaining.

Alvaro Unanua made four saves for the Golden Eagles in another strong performance in net.

Morten Bjoershol, Gerard Hernando and Simon Johansen scored the goals for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA had a 13-10 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Humboldt State goalkeeper Adrian Gallardo made four saves, including one on a penalty kick.

The Golden Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute when Manuel Villena was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Morten Bjoershol converted on the try for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Hernando made it 2-0 in the final minute of the first half after taking a pass from Jeppe Paulsen and hitting a shot that bounced off the inside of the left post and into the goal. It was Hernando's first goal of the season, while Paulsen collected his first assist.

The score remained the same into the 67th minute when Johansen picked up his first goal of the season with an assist from Aidan Wait, who picked up his fifth of the season. Johansen collected the ball at the top of the box and sent a shot past Gallardo and into the net.

Cal State LA honored eight student-athletes - Carlos Rincon, Cesar Oliva, Gonzalo Talavera, Jose Orellana, Jorge Orellana, Eddie Leon, David Elizaga and Morten Bjoershol - in pregame ceremonies.
