Golden Eagles Fire On All Cylinders In CCAA Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball turned in an outstanding performance Friday in an important California Collegiate Athletic Association match against Cal State San Marcos.

The Golden Eagles started quickly and never let up in an impressive 25-17, 25-22, 25-20 win over the Cougars in University Gym. Cal State LA (13-5, 9-2 CCAA) remains in second place in the conference with its fifth straight win.

Emily Elliott had an outstanding match for the Golden Eagles with 14 kills and a .522 hitting percentage. Alejandra Negron had nine kills and a .529 hitting percentage, while Eliza Cannon had 16 set assists to go along with seven kills and five blocks.

Kassy Doering had 10 kills and two blocks to lead the Cougars (9-8, 6-5 CCAA), who entered the night just two games behind the Golden Eagles in the conference standings.

Jaden Grova had three of the Golden Eagles' seven service aces and 14 set assists, while Daisy Crenshaw had a match-high seven blocks to go along with four kills.

Cal State LA had a 44-34 advantage in kills and a 11-5 edge in blocks. The Golden Eagles hit at a .284 clip to .150 for the Cougars.

The Golden Eagles led for most of the opening set, but the Cougars remained within striking distance until two decisive late runs. Cal State LA stretched a 17-15 lead to 20-15 behind the serving of Allison Linder. The run started with a bad set and also included an attack error and a block by Cannon.

After Cal State San Marcos closed to within 20-17, the Golden Eagles scored five straight points to close out the set. Kills by Negron and Crenshaw, an attack error, a kill by Elliott and an ace by Cannon gave the Golden Eagles the first set.

Cal State LA opened up a quick 7-1 lead in the second set behind the serving of Karla Santos, but Cal State San Marcos battled back and eventually tied the set at 19-19, evening the set after an ace by Doering. A kill by Negron and an ace by Ayjah Landers gave the Golden Eagles a 21-19 lead and they led the rest of the way. Cal State San Marcos got as close as 23-22 before kills by Cannon and Elliott finished the frame.

Cal State San Marcos grabbed a 7-4 lead early in the third set, but Cal State LA went on a 5-0 run to erase the deficit. A kill by Negron, an ace by Landers, a kill by Cannon, a bad set and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles a 9-7 lead.

The Golden Eagles took control of the set, extending a 16-13 lead to 20-13 after kills by Victoria Duarte and Santos, an ace by Landers and an attack error. 

Cal State LA got to match point at 24-15, but saw Cal State San Marcos fight off five set points before a kill by Santos ended it.
