LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team kept rolling along on Saturday with a California Collegiate Athletic Association sweep over Cal State East Bay.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to big early leads in the first two sets and rallied from a deficit in the third to post a 25-15, 25-13, 25-20 victory over the Pioneers. Cal State LA (14-5, 10-2 CCAA) won its sixth straight match to remain in second place in the conference.Â
Emily Elliott and
Eliza Cannon had 13 kills each to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Karla Santos had 10 kills and a sparkling .500 hitting percentage.
Mia Jordan and Alexandria Gloria had six kills each for the Pioneers (8-12, 3-9 CCAA).
Cannon also had 25 set assists and four service aces for the Golden Eagles, while
Jeshmarie Suarez had a match-high 17 digs.
Jaden Grova had 14 set assists and six digs.
Cal State LA had a 51-27 edge in kills and hit at a .308 percentage to .137 for the Pioneers. Cal State East Bay had a 5-4 edge in blocks. Cal State LA had seven service aces and five service errors.
The Golden Eagles took control early and opened up a 15-8 lead following kills by Elliott and Negron and an ace by Santos. Cal State LA kept a safe margin the rest of the set and eventually closed it out with a service error, an ace by Cannon, a kill by Elliott and another ace by Cannon.
Cal State LA used a decisive run in the second set to take command. Leading 10-8, the Golden Eagles got a block from Cannon and
Haley Roundtree, an attack error, a kill by Cannon, a block from Cannon and
Victoria Duarte and kills from Santos and Cannon to open up a 16-8 advantage.Â
Back-to-back kills by Elliott, a block by Roundtree and Elliott, a service aceby Suarez, a block by Roundtree and Negron and a kill by Elliott got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-11. The Pioneers fought off a pair of set points before a kill by Roundtree ended the set.
The Golden Eagles had to battle back from a 19-16 deficit in the third set. Kills by Santos and Cannon, another kill by Santos and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles the lead before a kill by Steena Hubbard tied it at 20-20 for the Pioneers.
The Golden Eagles, though, got two straight kills from
Shelby Grubbs, a kill by Elliott, an ace by Cannon and a kill by Elliott to end the match.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday with a big match at first-place Cal State San Bernardino at 7 p.m.
