SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team saw its six-match winning streak come to an end Friday night at Cal State San Bernardino.
The Golden Eagles won the first set, only to see the Coyotes storm back for a 22-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-15 victory at Coussoullis Arena. Cal State LA (14-6, 10-3 CCAA) slips back into a tie for second place in the CCAA with Cal Poly Pomona and San Francisco State, while Cal State San Bernardino (17-3, 12-0 CCAA) extended its hold on first place in the conference.
Karla Santos had 20 kills and 14 digs for Cal State LA, while
Alejandra Negron had 11 kills and 15 digs and
Eliza Cannon had 11 kills and 17 set assists.
Jenna Patton had 14 hills and hit at a .500 percentage to lead Cal State San Bernardino, while Asia Clarke had 12 kills and 16 digs and Alexis Cardoza had 11 kills and eight digs.
Jaden Grova had 24 set assists and nine digs for the Golden Eagles, while
Emily Elliott had nine kills and three blocks and
Jeshmarie Suarez had a match-high 17 digs.
Cal State San Bernardino had a slim 60-56 edge in kills and hit at a .298 percentage to .179. Both teams had nine blocks. Cal State LA had three aces and four service errors, while Cal State San Bernardino had four aces and five errors.
For the second time this season, Cal State LA took the opening set from the Coyotes. The Golden Eagles took a 9-5 lead after a kill from Elliott and two straight kills by Cannon, but the Coyotes responded with four straight points to tie it. The lead changed six times in the set and there were 14 ties. The final tie came at 22-22 before Cal State LA earned a point on an attack error to take the lead and Santos delivered back-to-back kills to give the Golden Eagles the set.
Cal State San Bernardino jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set and never trailed, although the Golden Eagles were able to pull to within a single point on several occasions, the final time at 12-11 following a kill by Santos. After the Coyotes built leads as large as seven points, the Golden Eagles pulled to within 22-20 after a kill by Cannon, a block by
Victoria Duarte and Cannon and a kill by Negron. The Coyotes, though, scored the next two points to get to set point. A kill by Duarte saved one set point, by a Patton kill evened the match.
Cal State LA took a quick 3-1 lead in the third set and led as late as 13-12 after a kill by Santos. The Coyotes, though, went on a pair of runs to open up leads of 18-14 and 21-15 and the Golden Eagles couldn't recover.
Cal State LA jumped out to a 12-8 lead in the fourth set after kills by
Haley Roundtree and Santos, but the Coyotes scored nine straight points to take a 17-12 lead and Cal State LA couldn't get any closer than five points the rest of the way.
Cal State LA will return to action on Saturday with a match at Cal Poly Pomona beginning at 5 p.m.
