Golden Eagles Fall In Five-Set Battle With Broncos

POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team was unable to generate any fifth-set magic Saturday night in a key California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Cal Poly Pomona.

The Golden Eagles overcame a slow start and forced the match into a fifth set, but the Broncos regrouped for a 25-11, 15-25, 26-24, 22-25, 15-9 win in Kellogg Arena. Cal State LA (14-7, 10-4 CCAA) slips out of second place in the conference, while No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona (18-3, 11-3 CCAA) stays in second along with San Francisco State.

After the two conference contenders traded lopsided victories in the first two sets, the match really got competitive in the third set. The Golden Eagles rallied from a 16-13 deficit after a kill by Santos, three straight kills by Elliott and an ace by Santos put the Golden Eagles ahead, 18-16. A block by Elliott made it 19-17 before the Broncos scored four straight points for a 21-19 lead. The Golden Eagles got to set point at 24-23 after a kill by Santos, but the Broncos scored the next three points to take a 2-1 lead.

The Golden Eagles had to dig out of an 18-14 hole in the fourth set. Two kills by Negron and one by Santos brought the Golden Eagles to within 18-17 and kills by Cannon and Santos and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles the lead. The set was tied at 21-21 before a kill by Cannon and an ace by Cannon made it 23-21. After the Broncos made it 23-22, kills by Santos and Negron sent the match into a fifth set.

Cal State LA fell behind early and couldn't catch up. After trailing 10-6, the Golden Eagles got a kill by Santos and a block by Duarte and Cannon to cut the deficit to 10-8. A kill by Santos kept the margin at two at 11-9, but the Broncos scored the final four points to close out the match.
