Golden Eagles Clinch Spot In CCAA Tourney With Win

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team picked up a big California Collegiate Athletic Association win over San Francisco State Friday night to clinch a spot in the conference tournament.

The Golden Eagles raced out to a 2-0 sets lead and beat the Gators, 25-15, 25-21, 16-25, 25-20 in University Gym. Cal State LA (15-7, 11-4 CCAA) jumps into a third-place tie with the Gators (18-4, 11-4 CCAA) and qualified for the CCAA Tournament for the sixth straight season. The Golden Eagles were tournament finalists in 2019.

Karla Santos led a balanced Cal State LA attack with 11 kills and 15 digs. Emily Elliott and Alejandra Negron had eight kills each.

Jessica Haynie had a match-high 17 kills to lead San Francisco State.

Victoria Duarte had seven kills and two blocks and hit at a .545 percentage for the Golden Eagles, while Shelby Grubbs had six kills and four blocks. Eliza Cannon had six kills and 26 set assists, while Jeshmarie Suarez had 16 digs and an ace. Jaden Grova had 14 set assists and a service ace.

Cal State LA had a 50-40 edge in kills and hit at a .240 percentage to .145 for the Gators. The Golden Eagles had an 8-7 advantage in blocks and had seven service aces with 10 errors, while the Gators had six aces with nine errors.

Talia Niu had a pair of service aces for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State LA got off to a quick start in the opening set. After surrendering the first three points of the match, the Golden Eagles scored the next four and moved out to an 11-5 lead after kills by Elliott, Cannon and Santos and an attack error. The lead grew to 15-7 after an ace by Allison Linder and the Golden Eagles kept a safe lead until getting a kill by Negron, an attack error and an ace by Ayjah Landers to end the set.

Cal State LA used a 5-0 run in the second set to extend a 13-11 lead to 18-11 following a service error, two attack errors, a block by Grubbs and a kill by Cannon. San Francisco State battled back and closed the deficit to 22-20 before a service error, and an ace by Suarez got the Golden Eagles to set point. The Gators fought off one set point, but a kill by Grubbs gave the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead.

After dropping the third set, the Golden Eagles had to dig deep to put the Gators away. Cal State LA took a 10-5 lead after kills by Santos, Negron and Elliott, but the Gators battled back and eventually tied the set at 13-13.

 The Golden Eagles then scored the next five points to take the lead for good. Three errors by the Gators were followed by a dig by Suarez that sailed over into the Gators' court and fell in for a point. A block by Duarte and Cannon made it 18-13.

Cal State LA opened up a 23-16 lead after a kill by Grubbs, but San Francisco State scored four straight points to close to within 23-20. Kills by Landers and Negron gave the Golden Eagles the match.

Cal State LA will play its final home game of the season against Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday at 5 p.m. The Golden Eagles will honor Daisy Crenshaw, Victoria Duarte, Alejandra Negron, Karla Santos and Jeshmarie Suarez in Senior Night ceremonies before the match.
