LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA had five student-athletes named to the 2020 California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Track & Field All-Star Team, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Shingirai Hlanguyo,
Nicholas Harper,
Porte-Joie Tshiaba,
Abraxaz Sanchez and
Derrick Atkins all earned all-star recognition. Â
The list of 32 student-athletes mirrors the championship roster size for CCAA track & field, and is not bound by specific events, the conference announced. All nine men's track & field programs were guaranteed one representative to showcase talent across the league. These standout performers were submitted for consideration by the league's men's track & field sports information contacts, with additional nominees listed, by school, at the bottom.
The All-Stars are selected based solely on performances and marks achieved during the shortened spring season, therefore some big names in the sport are absent based on the limited number of competition dates. Each individual picked has a worthy standard set during the 2020 outdoor season to earn their All-Star selection.
Impressively, of the 28 NCAA Division II men's track & field automatic and provisional qualifying marks, 18 belong to CCAA student-athletes.
The Golden Eagles had several outstanding early-season performances after competing in three meets, including the Cal State LA Invitational.
Hlanguyo had already posted outstanding times in the 100 and 200 for the Golden Eagles. He had already posted a provisional qualifying mark in the 200 meters with a time of 21.24 that was No. 2 in the nation. He also had a time of 10.67 in the 100 that was No. 1 in the CCAA and the West Region and No. 2 in the nation.Â
Harper was also off to a tremendous start and had the nation's No. 1 time in the 200 with a mark of 21.22. He was also No. 1 in the nation in the 400 with a mark of 47.78 and was a key part of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.
Tshiaba, who earned All-America honors in the high jump last year after finishing fourth in the nation, was looking like a strong national contender once again when the season was halted. He had already cleared 6-11 in his speciality and posted a strong provisional qualifying mark. His mark was No. 1 in the nation and he won all three events he competed in during the short season.
Sanchez, a top middle distance runner for the Golden Eagles during his career, was No. 3 in the conference, No. 3 in the West Region and No. 3 in the nation in the 800 meters with an outstanding early-season mark of 1:54.90. He had already recorded a personal best in the event and was primed for a big season.
Atkins had already posted a personal best early in the season and his mark of 46-4.75 in the triple jump was No. 4 in the conference, No. 4 in the West Region and No. 4 in the nation.
