Biography

2022: Had another outstanding season to complete a sensational career for the Golden Eagles. Earned four more All-California Collegiate Athletic Association honors, including two conference titles as part of the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. Also finished second in the 100 meters with a season’s best time of 10.53 and third in the 200. Earned second-team All-American honors for the first time as part of the 4x400 relay team that finished ninth in the nation. Earned four more All-West Region awards for the 100, 200, 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay. Had best marks of 10.53 in the 100, 21.27 in the 200, and 49.79 in the 400. Earned CCAA 2021-22 All-Academic and 2022 Spring Academic Honor Roll recognition. For his career, had best marks of 10.52 in the 100, 21.20 in the 200 and 48.87 in the 400. Earned one All-American, 11 All-Region and nine All-CCAA awards. Finished his career No. 10 all-time at Cal State LA in the 100 meters.

2021: Earned CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 honors for a second straight year. Earned 2020-21 California Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic honors and also received 2021 CCAA Spring Academic Honor Roll recognition. Team did not compete due to COVID-19.

2020: Was off to a tremendous start for the Golden Eagles in his third year with the program when the season was halted. Had already posted a provisional qualifying mark in the 200 meters with a time of 21.24 that was No. 2 in the NCAA Division II and No. 3 in the nation over all NCAA divisions. Had a best time of 10.67 in the 100 that was also No. 2 in the nation. Earned CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 honors. Was Cal State LA’s recipient of the 2019-20 Dr. Hal Charnofsky Award, an award presented by the CCAA for exemplary commitment to athletic and academic pursuits. Earned 2019-20 CCAA All-Academic and 2020 CCAA Spring All-Academic honors.

2019: Had a second outstanding season with the Golden Eagles despite having his season curtailed by an injury. Had best times of 10.54 in the 100 meters, 21.20 in the 200 and 48.87 in the 400. The 100 and 200 times were the best on the team. Earned his fifth All-CCAA award by finishing second with the 4x100 relay team. Earned three more All-West Region awards in the 100, 200 and 4x100 relay. Earned CCAA Track Athlete of the Week honors for the week of March 18-24 and earned 2018-19 CCAA All-Academic and 2019 CCAA Spring All-Academic honors. Also earned All-Academic honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

2018: Had an outstanding first season with the Golden Eagles. Earned four All-CCAA and four All-West Region awards in the 100, 200, 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay. Was part of two CCAA championship relay teams. Also finished second in the 100 and second in the 200. Had best times of 10.52 in the 100 and 21.32 in the 200. Posted an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark, but did not get into nationals. Was named the CCAA Freshman of the Year.

At St. Benedict’s College: Was the South African 100-meter champion for two years and set the 100 and 200 school records. Earned Academic Honors. Was a Region 5 champion and earned a bronze medal in the 100 at the Africa Youth Championships. Competed in track and field, rugby and basketball.

Personal: Son of Wilfred and Ellah Hlanguyo. Majoring in Kinesiology. Enjoys drawing and photography.  Lists playing in his first sevens Rugby World Cup as his most exciting experience in sports. Notes he played in the World Cup for rugby for Zimbabwe. Younger brother Tashinga Hlanguyo is also on Cal State LA’s track and field team.
