POMONA -- Cal State LA's baseball team saw a late lead get away for a second straight night at Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles led, 6-4, after six innings, but the Broncos scored two in the seventh and one in the eighth to pull out a 7-6 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory Saturday night at Scolinos Field. Cal State LA (4-6, 3-3 CCAA) lost the series opener on Friday on a ninth-inning wild pitch. On Saturday, Cal Poly Pomona (6-4, 4-2 CCAA) got the winning run in the eighth inning when a baserunner scored from second base on a groundout.
Tyler Odekirk went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Golden Eagles, while
Gerardo Castaneda and
Nick Atkins also had two hits each.
Ryan Lewis had a two-run single that gave the Golden Eagles their 6-4 lead in the sixth.
Garrett Boyce started on the mound for the Golden Eagles and went five innings. He allowed six hits and four runs while walking three and striking out six.
Brent Jacques got the first two outs in the sixth and Julian Garcia got the final out in the sixth before being charged for the two runs in the seventh.
Fino Amador went 1 2/3 innings and gave up one run on one hit.
The Golden Eagles scored single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. Odekirk singled to lead off the first and scored on a run-scoring double by
Aaron McCann. Castaneda tripled to lead off the second and scored on a groundout by
Randy Buenrostro.
After the Broncos took the lead with four runs in the third inning, the Golden Eagles answered with four runs in the sixth.
Johnny Pacheco doubled and took third on a single by
Jordan Myrow. Castaneda drove in Pacheco with a sacrifice fly, Odekirk singled in a run to tie it at 4-4 and Lewis hit a clutch two-run single to give Cal State LA the lead.
Cal State LA will conclude the series with Cal Poly Pomona with a doubleheader at Reeder Field beginning at 1 p.m.
