LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's baseball team saw very little go right Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association doubleheader against Cal Poly Pomona.
The Golden Eagles got a three-run home run from
Allen Pacheco in the first inning of the opener, but there wasn't much else to cheer about after Cal State LA dropped both ends of the doubleheader, 18-5 and 6-1, at Reeder Field. Cal State LA (4-8, 3-5 CCAA), which dropped a pair of one-run decisions in Pomona on Friday and Saturday, lost all four games of the conference series to the Broncos (8-4, 6-2 CCAA).
Pacheco hit a towering three-run shot in the bottom of the first inning of the opener to erase an early 1-0 deficit, but Cal Poly Pomona took advantage of some shaky Cal State LA defense to regain the lead in the third with a six-run rally. The Broncos added four runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and four more in the eighth on a grand slam home run by Brennan McKenzie, who ended up with five RBI in the opener.
Cal State LA got two runs in the ninth on a a run-scoring single by
Nick Penzetta and a sacrifice fly by
Ryan Lewis.
Drew Atherton went six innings and gave up five hits and three runs to get the win for the Broncos, while
Travis Burleson gave up eight hits and three earned runs over four innings and took the loss. One big bright spot for the Golden Eagles was a perfect ninth inning thrown by
Joey Deceglie, who missed all of the 2019 season because of injury.
Pacheco was 3-for-3 with three RBI for the Golden Eagles, while
Tyler Odekirk was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
In the seven-inning nightcap, the Broncos got three unearned runs in the third inning and went on to a 6-1 win. Rhys Stevens allowed seven hits and one run over six innings to get the win for Cal Poly Pomona.
Micah Hee allowed only one earned run over 4 1/3 innings and took the loss.
Christian Longoria tossed two scoreless innings of relief for the Golden Eagles.
Lewis went 3-for-4 for the Golden Eagles, while Odekirk went 1-for-4 with one RBI.
Cal State LA got its only run in the third inning when
Gerardo Castaneda doubled, took third on a sacrifice by
Nick Atkins and scored on a single by Odekirk.
Cal State LA will return to action with the opener of a four-game series against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday at 6 p.m. at Reeder Field.
