LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's beach volleyball team opened its 2020 season with an exciting win over Marymount University Wednesday in Santa Monica.
The Golden Eagles picked up a clutch three-set win at No. 4 pairs and straight-set wins at No. 2 and No. 5 pairs to edge Marymount, 3-2. Both contests the Golden Eagles lost came in three-set decisions.
Jessica Kaeka and
Julia Azevedo won their match at No. 2 pairs, 21-18, 21-12 and
Jeshmarie Suarez and
Shelby Grubbs won at No. 5 pairs, 21-14, 21-11. In the closest match of the day, Cal State LA's
Victoria Duarte and
Ashley Apel prevailed, 21-15, 13-21, 16-14.
Karla Santos and
Alejandra Negron fell in a tight three-set contest at No. 1 pairs, 21-13, 18-21, 15-11 and
Janessa Mata and
Alexis Seeley-Morris fell in a close three-set decision at No. 3 pairs, 15-21, 21-15, 15-8.
Cal State LA will return to action with a pair of matches on Friday, Feb. 28 against Ventura College and Golden West College.
